History

In today's station area consisted since 1803 of the Port of Vienna Wiener Neustadt channel; this port and the subsequent channel section were filled until 1849, after 1847 to 1849 on the site of the later Aspangbahn station a new harbor was built. The intent of private rail concessionaires late 1830s, the Gloggnitzer station, the first Vienna South Station to establish roughly where today the Vienna train station is center, was rejected by the state. Even before the completion of the continuous connecting train but insisted, as if on a map of 1856 is seen a partly built on the former canal route from the track opened in 1841 Gloggnitzer train station to the main customs office north of the present railway station Wien Mitte.

After demolition of the city wall from 1858 a railway terminus was planned near downtown, but was realized in 1859 through station at the new junction line from North Station to South Station. This course was in the area of today's railway station Wien Mitte, who was named after the nearby main customs office, originally in high position.

To enable the connection of here erected in deep level Wiener Stadtbahn, a new station was built in deep level in the course of urban railway construction and the Wien River regulation and opened on June 30, 1899 together with the lower Wiental and the Vienna connecting track. [A 1] The third and final section of the light rail, the Danube Canal line from the main customs office to Heiligenstadt, was handed over on August 6, 1901 without special solemnity of his determination. [A 2]

1923, the Vienna Stadtbahn was (except for the suburban line ) taken from the Vienna city administration in lease, electrified by 1925 and re-opened and recorded in the same year in the tariff association with the city's trams. Thus, the passenger rate increased considerably. The station master 's customs office became the major interchange with rail and Pressburger Bahn and tram lines E2, G2, H2 and O (all four in the disability road ) and J and T ( in the country Hauptstrasse ). The urban rail system has been completely separated from the whole train operating on the route north - south station train station; it existed in 1925 no longer track connections. ( The full rail operation was electrified until the late fifties of the 20th century. )

In 1957 was on the cover of the station one of the first shopping centers in Vienna, the now-defunct AEZ built.

With the opening of the high-speed railway in 1962, the station was renamed highway. About the web site there was a bus station for local buses, which was abandoned around 2000.

Because of the new building of the Franz- Josef - station of the railway station from 1975 was also station for international trains such as the express train Vindobona; For this reason, it was renamed the Vienna center, while the next town in railway station, has since 1978 subway station, keep the name road today.

Since the 1990s, there were plans for a new, denser redevelopment of the station area, connected to a new station building; the existing building stock from 1962 had been long neglected and was considered a " disgrace ". However, the immediate neighborhood testified to the tendencies of the Vienna city planning for construction compaction in this area (office and cinema building W3, Justice Centre Wien Mitte ).

1999, a complete renovation of the station was planned, with the high-rise project Ortnersche Wien Mitte provided for up to 97 m tall office towers. Turned a large citizens' initiative is not only against these towers, but especially against the disproportionate compression and the associated transport and structural problems. Even UNESCO placed into question whether this project is compatible with the World Heritage status of the immediately adjacent Old Vienna. 2003, the project was dropped.

The later realized project was reduced significantly in the overall extent. It has a gross floor area of 150,000 square meters and a maximum height of about 70 m. A shopping center with approximately 30,000 m² and office space of about 62,000 m² are now part of the complex. Construction of the building, which one has the form Marxergasse open towards U, was on 11 October 2007. Completion was originally scheduled for late 2011, but the first shops opened until 8 November 2012. Was the full commissioning of the shopping center in April 2013. with 50 shops, it is Vienna's largest inner-city shopping centers and is marketed under the name of the Mall. Also housed in the building is the new financial center of Wien-Mitte, which concentrates seven existing Wiener revenue offices at this location. On the roof of the building a solar power plant with 1,424 panels and 3,100 square meters of collector emerged. It delivers 356 kilowatts peak and about 324 megawatt hours per year. It is the fifth and largest-ever civil solar power plant in Vienna and was put into operation on December 2, 2013.

Configuration

In Verteilgeschoß between the stations of the U3 and U4 is the email mural permanent graffiti of Oswald Oberhuber. The installation was constructed in 1991 as a second work of the Viennese subway art. The picture was taken from Oberhuber's phase of " wild paintings"; it shows in the style of graffiti strange animals such as amoeba -like elephants, elephant -shaped amoebas, intricate snake birds, an innocent -sighted poodle sheep camel etc. Oberhuber described his work as " narrative without telling" or as " Fabuliergeschichten that mean nothing."

In two places the U4 platform 1993, the video installations Planet of the commuters have been established by the 3 month period from Hofstetter Kurt. At the head of a stylized pendulum clock is a CRT monitor, the live shows in the bottom of the platform fisheye perspective, coupled with the also live recorded ambient noise. The circular image is of three " moons " circling the show as hour, minute and second hands time. The installation was implemented jointly by the Wiener Linien and the ÖBB; two identical installations are located on the platforms 1 and 4 of the S-Bahn.
