Wienux

Wienux ( WIENUX ) was a Linux distribution for employees of the City Administration. Objective was to migrate from Proprietary software to open source software. The portmanteau word Wienux is composed of Vienna and Linux. Wienux was developed based on the open-source Debian GNU / Linux, the Unix / Linux desktop KDE, and a revised hardware detection of Knoppix. Started in 2005, the migration project was canceled by the year 2009 around, also the associated distribution is no longer being developed.

Goals and implementation

At about 4,800 of the 18,000 PC workstations the Vienna City Administration can be used since the end of January 2005 optional Wienux or Windows 2000 / Office 2000. Vienna is thus the second city (after Munich) in German-speaking represents that allows its employees to work with open source software.

The project is based on the study "Open Source Software in the workplace in the City of Vienna ". The study represents a further contribution to the feasibility and costs when switching from proprietary software to open source software

From 4 October 2005, the Wienux distribution was waiting in the form of a 1 -gigabyte zip archive for download, or could be ordered on DVD. Since about November 2008 Wienux is no longer available for download.

2008 there were only 1000 computers, which converted 200 in the city proper administration, at Wienux. Rumors that the development would be discontinued, hardened by the message that jobs in the kindergartens are again equipped with Windows Vista. Because of Kompatiblitätsproblemen with a voice conveying solution that only ran on Windows, 2008 720 computer were converted in the kindergartens on Windows XP, so that only 280 computers with Wienux worked as an operating system.

In June 2009, it was again decided that the city of Vienna again increasingly open source software used, although it was not explicitly stated whether the development of Wienux is resumed. Same time it was decided in 2009 until 2012 for 1 million euros to procure Windows licenses and install open source software only to employees desire. Was justified by the Vera Layr, spokesperson of IT Municipal Department 14, so that "there is no open source alternative on the market for some work areas ."

Installation

The distribution comes out without a standalone partitioning tool. The first hard drive is completely erased. For parallel installations with other systems Wienux how many older Windows versions should be installed first.

Related Projects

In the years 2003 and 2004, the project LiMux was started in Munich and partially implemented, based on open source software has a conversion of all the approximately 14,000 computers in the Munich City Council until 2008 goal. By May 2013 14.000 jobs on the LiMux client were migrated, which means " well over 80 % of jobs " corresponds.
