  • Public Domain: Contents are not copyrighted, perhaps because the author died more than seventy years ago. An example of this is a picture of the Mona Lisa. Other authors have published works consciously without copyright claim. All these works can be used without requirements.
  • Free License: A license in this context is a legal text that describes what can be done with the so- licensed works and under what conditions. Has the author published a work, for example with the free license CC -BY, then it may only be used under two conditions: The author must be mentioned and also the license in question.

History and current stock

The German computer scientist Erik Möller proposed the project before in March 2004, in September of the same year it was implemented.

The maximum amount of data a file is by default 100 mebibyte ( 104857600 bytes). Registered users can set it to 1 gibibyte ( 1.048576 billion bytes ) the limit is " chunked uploads " itself. In the " server-side uploads " no capping exists in the file size.

File Formats

Open-source and non-patented standards are simply inserted. Accepted audio formats are Ogg ( FLAC, Speex or Vorbis codecs ), WAV, WebM, as well as MIDI. Videos can be uploaded as Ogg Theora and WebM. For pictures and graphics formats Scalable Vector Graphics ( SVG), Portable Network Graphics ( PNG), Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), Tagged Image File Format ( TIFF), JPEG, and XCF (GIMP ) are possible. For scanned text DjVu partially used. Furthermore, the format of PDF support ( for texts).

Cooperation

Editing may be up to a few locked pages anyone without registration. A screening process was introduced in March 2010. Uploading media is possible only for registered users. Various utility programs help to transfer files with matching licenses from Flickr and other photo sites to find Commons.
