Wilhelm von Scherff

Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Gustav Johann von Scherff ( born February 6, 1834 in Frankfurt am Main, † April 16, 1911 in Venice) was a Prussian officer, last general of infantry and military writer.

Life

Origin

William was the son of Friedrich von Scherff († October 21, 1869 in Wiesbaden, Germany ) and his wife Caroline, born of Arnoldi ( born December 21, 1794 in Dillenburg, † December 24, 1868 in Wiesbaden). His father was Dutch Council of State and Ambassador to the Bundestag in Frankfurt am Main.

Military career

Scherff visited in his youth schools in his hometown and Wiesbaden. Effective October 16, 1849, he was a cadet in Berlin and was then transferred to the 2nd Guards Regiment of Foot of the Prussian army on 27 April 1852 as second lieutenant. Between October 1856 and June 1859 we commanded Scherff for further training at the General War School and was 1860-1866 adjutant of the Prussian garrison brigade. He made the campaigns of 1866 and 1870 as a general staff officer and was subsequently the General Staff. 1873 to 1878 he was a teacher of tactics at the Military Academy.

Scherff was then until 1879 a member of the Border Regulatory Commission in Bulgaria, upon his return to Commander of Infantry Regiment No. 29, 1882 Chief of Staff of the XI. Army Corps, was awarded on February 13, 1883 the rank of brigadier commander and was eventually transported on December 6, 1883, for Major-General. As such Scherff was then September 4, 1884 to June 11, 1888 Commander of the 41.Infanterie Brigade and was then appointed lieutenant general commander of the 33rd Division in Strasbourg, with simultaneous transport. A post he held less than a year and was on June 17, 1889 Commander of the 18th Division.

Although recommended by his superiors to the Commanding General, Scherff retired and was placed under award of the character as a General of the Infantry on February 14, 1891 board for discussion.

Scherff died in 1911 on a trip to Italy in Venice.

Family

Scherff had on 19 December 1882 in Metz with Elsa Johanna Ernestine von Holleben ( born October 4, 1862 in Trier) married. The marriage remained childless.
