Willi Jäger

Willi Jäger ( born August 15, 1940 in Kschellowitz, County Tepl ) is a German mathematician.

Life

After graduation in Hof an der Saale in 1959, he took in the same year the study of mathematics and physics at the University of Munich. He was promoted from Cusanuswerk from baseline and received his PhD in 1966 on the Dirichlet problem in outdoor areas for the wave equation. From 1964-1969 he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Munich and the University of Göttingen. In 1969 he habilitated with a work entitled an ordinary differential operator of second order for functions with values in a Hilbert space. From 1969 to 1970 he was a visiting scientist at the Courant Institute, New York. In 1970 he became professor of mathematics at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster and from 1974 he was professor of applied mathematics at the University of Heidelberg. In 1987 he was founding director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR ) in Heidelberg, its executive director, he was until 1998. In 2004 he founded together with Bert Sakmann the first German Centre for Modelling and Simulation in the Biosciences ( BIOMS ).

In addition to problems of scientific computing, including the effective use of computers for mathematical modeling of complicated, most scientific problems, hunter deals with problems of nonlinear differential equations, the calculus of variations, the bifurcation theory and the spectral theory of differential operators usually with a view to specific applications such as Data visualization.

Willi Jäger is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. He is Chairman of the Society for Mathematical Research on the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach.

He is also the publisher of mathematics publications by Springer -Verlag and R. Oldenbourg Verlag ( Science Publishers ) and for the Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, short Crelle Journal de Gruyter publishing house, works.

Awards

He was given two honorary doctorates awarded by the University of Saint Petersburg and the Babeş -Bolyai University of Cluj (Romania ), of which he was also appointed honorary senator. He also received awards such as the Alwin Walther Medal of the TU Darmstadt in 2000 and the State Research Prize Baden -Württemberg ( 1994).

In August 2007, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st class. In 2007 he held the Gaussian lecture the DMV.
