William A. Stein

William A. Stone ( born February 21, 1974 in Santa Barbara ) is an American mathematician who deals with modular forms and number theory.

Stone studied computer science at Northern Arizona University and then mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, among others Robin Hartshorne, Robert F. Coleman and Kenneth Ribet. In 2000 he earned his doctorate under Hendrik Lenstra, Berkeley (Explicit approaches to modular abelian varieties ). 2001 to 2005 he was Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professor at Harvard University, was the 2005/2006 Associate Professor at the University of California, San Diego and was then an associate professor at the University of Washington.

It deals with modular abelian varieties in particular on computational aspects and is the founder of the Sage project for open source mathematics software. A focus of interest are generalizations of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton - Dyer on modular abelian varieties.

In his spare time he skateboard.
