William Baumol

William Jack Baumol ( born February 26, 1922 in New York City ) is an American economist. Baumol is the developer of the concept of Conte Table Markets.

Life and work

Baumol received in 1942 a Bachelor of Social Science at the College of the City of New York and in 1949 he was at the London School of Economics for Ph.D. doctorate. 1942 to 1943 and 1946 he worked at the Ministry of Agriculture of the United States from 1947 to 1949 he was Assistant Lecturer at the London School of Economics. From 1949 to 1992 he was Professor of Economics at Princeton University. Since his retirement, he is a Senior Research Economist at Princeton. At the same time he is since 1971 professor at New York University and Director of The CV Starr Center for Applied Economics.

With the concept of Conte Table Markets ( dt vulnerable markets ) are explained limited yields in the monopoly. The fact that the monopolist can receive high returns, also increases the attractiveness for competitors to enter the monopolistic market. According to Baumol So the monopolist endeavors to keep profit margins low to in the market to protect themselves from competition.

Baumol is married and has two children.
