William Christopher

William Christopher ( born October 20, 1932 in Evanston, Illinois ) is an American actor.

He became internationally known through the role as Father Francis John Patrick Mulcahy in the American television series M * A * S * H. He is married to Barbara O'Connor, with whom he had two sons ( John & Ned ) has.

Childhood and youth

William Christopher was born in Evanston. He spent his childhood in a suburb of Chicago, where he spent the war years. After attending the New Trier High School, he graduated from Wesleyan University in 1954, where he studied drama. He worked here not only as an actor, but also in the areas of fencing, football and singing.

Look Playful career

After graduating, he worked in numerous films and TV movies in supporting roles as an actor of 1966, for example, in the series Hogan's Heroes. In 1957 he married Barbara O'Conner, who he met through a blind date.

From 1972, he played the role of Father Francis John Patrick Mulcahy on the television series M * A * S * H, a naive and somewhat insecure, but helpful clergyman who was assigned to the eponymous hospital in the Korean War. Since Mulcahy was originally planned as a side character, Christopher was only at the beginning of the 5th season a permanent contract. (But this he could once do not perceive, as he fell seriously ill with hepatitis. ) At this time, he had long been established as the main character, and the audience was extremely popular. He remained a favorite with audiences until the end of the series.

After the series ended in 1983, he played in the less successful sequel After MASH again the role of Father Mulcahy and even participated in several, mostly minor roles. It also led with Jamie Farr, the performer of Klinger in M * A * S * on H until the mid-1990s, the play The Odd Couple on stage.

After acting and charity work

He retired but continues from acting back in order to take better care of his autistic son Ned can, which must be supervised constantly.

William Christopher is Vice Honorary Chairman of the Autism Society of America and is active in the Devereux Foundation, which helps everybody.
