William Collins (representative)

William Collins ( born February 22, 1818 in Lowville, New York, † June 18, 1878 in Cleveland, Ohio) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Ela Collins was his father.

Career

William Collins was born about three years after the end of the British - American War in Lowville in Lewis County. He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice in Lowville. From 1845 to 1847 he was district attorney in Lewis County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1846 for the 30th Congress Collins was in the 18th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Preston King on March 4, 1847. Since he gave up for reelection in 1848, he retired after March 3, 1849 from the Congress.

In 1853 he moved to Cleveland, where he continued to work as a lawyer. In addition, he pursued banking transactions. He was director of the Lake Shore Railroad and East Cleveland Railroad. After the founding of the Republican Party in 1856, he joined this. On June 18, 1878, he died in Cleveland and was buried at Lake View Cemetery.
