William Conway (cardinal)

John William Cardinal Conway ( born January 22, 1913 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, † April 17, 1977 in Armagh, Northern Ireland ) was archbishop of Armagh.

Life

William Conway studied in Belfast, Maynooth ( County Kildare ) and Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 20 June 1937, the sacrament of Holy Orders and, after further studies in 1940 as a lecturer in the formation of priests.

Pius XII. appointed him on 31 May 1958 Titular Bishop of Neve and Auxiliary Bishop of Armagh. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal John D' Alton, whose successor he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1963.

William Conway participated in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. On September 10, 1963, he received the appointment as Archbishop of Armagh. Pope Paul VI. took him on 22 February 1965 as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Patrizio in the College of Cardinals. He died on 17 April 1977 in Armagh and was buried on the grounds of the local cathedral.
