William Drummond of Hawthornden
William Drummond of Hawthornden ( born December 13, 1585 Hawthornden Castle, Midlothian, † December 4, 1649 ) was a Scottish poet.
Life
Drummond's poems show no Scottish influences, but are influenced by English and Italian poets. Especially Drummond inspired by Edmund Spenser. He not only wrote eulogies and verses to Charles I when he came to the 1633 coronation visit to Scotland, but he supported him politically, both in its submission of the Scots as well as in his power struggle with the English Parliament.
The British Hawthornden Prize for Literature was named after Drummond.
