William H. Baker

William Henry Baker ( born January 17, 1827 in Lenox, New York, † November 25, 1911 in Constantia, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1875 and 1879 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Henry Baker was born in 1827 in Madison County. The family moved in 1829 to Oswego County. He attended community schools as well as the Red Creek Academy and the Mexico Academy. He then studied law. After receiving his license to practice law in November 1851 in Syracuse, he began practicing in Cleveland. He retired in 1853 after Constantia in Oswego County. In January 1863 he was district attorney in Oswego County - a post which he held until January 1870. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1874 for the 44th Congress Baker was in the 24th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of R. Holland Duell on March 4, 1875. He was re-elected once. Since he gave up a re-election bid in 1878, he retired after the March 3, 1879 out of the Congress. In 1884 he participated in the Constituent Assembly of New York as a delegate. Then he worked in agriculture. He died about three years before the outbreak of World War I in Constantia and was then buried in the Trinity Church Cemetery.
