William Happer ( born July 27, 1939 in Vellore, India) is an American physicist in the field of atomic physics, optics and spectroscopy.

Happer studied at the University of North Carolina where he received his BS in 1960 and 1964 received his doctorate in physics at Princeton University. He changed in the following years from 1964 to 1980 at Columbia University. Since 1980 he has been, with the exception of a two -year hiatus from 1991 to 1993 at the United States Department of Energy, from Princeton University.
