William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (died 1469)

William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (* 1423, † 1469 ), also known as William Black, was the son of William ap Thomas, builder of Raglan Castle, and grandson of Dafydd Gam, a follower of King Henry V of England. He founded the Herbert family.

Like his father, Herbert was a supporter of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, and was during the Wars of the Roses to the House of York. Herbert was rewarded by King Edward IV in 1461 with the title of Lord Herbert of Raglan. In 1468 he was created Earl of Pembroke and received custody of the young Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, he wanted to marry his own daughter. However, he soon came with his great rival, Richard Neville, together, the 1469 turned against King Edward IV. Herbert was executed by the Lancastrianern, now under the leadership of Warwick, after the battle of Edgecote Moor, near Banbury.

His heir was his legitimate son, William. This refrained from 1479 to the earldom. Later, she was for a grandson, another William Herbert, restored. He was the son of Sir Richard Herbert of Ewyas, an illegitimate son of William.

Marriage and children

He married Anne Devereux, daughter of Walter Devereux, Lord Chancellor of Ireland and Elizabeth Merbury. They had at least ten children:

William had two illegitimate children, but their mother or mothers are unsure of the identity:

  • Sir Richard Herbert of Ewyas. Father of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke ( 1551 created new)
  • Sir George Herbert. Probably the son of Wedel Verch Hoesgyn. Married to Sybil Croft
