Baron Herbert

Baron Herbert [of Raglan ] is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of England.

The title was in 1461 for William Herbert ( "Black William" ) ( 1423-1469 ), son of William ap Thomas Welsh nobleman and Lord Raglan Castle, created the writ in the form of a Barony by. These were the first peerage of Herbert Dynasty.

William Herbert was raised in 1468 to the Earl of Pembroke and Baron Herbert thus to subordinate title, which was run as a courtesy title by the eldest son. After his death, was inherited the title of this and peerages and became the 2nd Earl and 2nd Baron. He changed the title of Earl of Pembroke in 1479 against an Earl of Huntington, but he left at his own death in 1491 only one daughter, Elizabeth, which led to his Earl - title became extinct, the barony, for another inheritance applies, but was inherited by the daughter. Elizabeth married Charles Somerset, later 1st Earl of Worcester. Their common descendants were the Earls and Marquesses of Worcester and later the Dukes of Beaufort. Baron Herbert was it. Centuries for one of the many titles of this line

In 1984, the 10th Duke of Beaufort died childless, his next of kin, the daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of his older sister. As women in a Barony by writ are entitled to inherit the same without regard to the birth order, but the barony can not be shared, not the heiress received the title; ie the barony of Herbert fell into a state of rest ( Abeyance ). The same was true for the barony Botetourt. The Dukedom ( which could not be inherited by women ), however, came together with the subordinate title Marquess and Earl of Worcester to a distant cousin, David Somerset.

In 2002, then was for the Barony Herbert the Abeyance after 18 years in favor of David Seyfried ( born 1952 ), grandson of the 6th Earl of St Germans and his wife, the sister of the 10th Duke of Beaufort, finished. He changed his name to Seyfried -Herbert. David Seyfried Herbert is the 19th Baron Herbert and the first since Baroness Elizabeth, who does not carry any other title. The Barony of Botetourt, however, rests continue.

The eponymous Herbert family had the title not even 50 years. There have therefore been created with the same name later baronies for members of this family, see Baron Herbert of Chirbury and Baron Herbert of Lea.
