William Hirons

William Hirons ( born June 15, 1871 in Wolston, † January 5, 1958 in Nottingham ) was a British athlete and Tauzieher.

Hirons took part in the 1908 Olympic Games in London in the tug of war and won with the British team the gold medal. In fact, the silver as the bronze medal also went to British teams. By then 36 years Hirons was the oldest members of the gold medal team. Like all team members of all three British teams also worked as a police officer Hirons.

Hirons team was called the London City Police. In the final of the competition on 18 July 1908, the London City Police slammed the policy as Liverpool team -titled second-placed team. The clarity of the victory was stressed medially after the losing team Liverpool Police had previously faced allegations of manipulation during the competition.
