William I, Count of Hainaut

William III. of Holland, called the Good, (* 1286, † June 7, 1337 ) was Count of Holland, Hainaut and Zeeland from the house of Avesnes. He was the eldest son of Count John II of Avesnes- Hainaut - Holland and Philippa of Luxembourg, daughter of Count Henry V

Life

William III. 1304 followed his father in the government. His cousin Emperor Henry VII ( Mother: Beatrice of Avesnes ) recognized him, although in his heritage, but he still had years of struggle for his inheritance. It was not until 1323 he sat prevailed against all opponents. In 1325 he gave the Queen of England Isabella of France ( 1292-1358 ) and her lover Roger Mortimer ( 1287-1330 ) asylum and helped them in England. William was one of the most powerful princes in the kingdom, enjoying high reputation. He brought in 1337 nor the German - British alliance concluded, that meant the beginning of the Hundred Years War.

Family

Was married to William with Joan of Valois (1294-1352), daughter of Count Charles of Valois and sister of the future King Philip VI. of France. The couple had five children:

  • Margaret (1310-1356), ∞ Emperor Louis IV (1282-1347);
  • Philippa (1312-1369), ∞ king Edward III. of England (1312-1377);
  • Isabella (1314-1360), ∞ with Robert de Namur
  • Johanna (1315-1374), ∞ Duke William of Jülich;
  • William IV (1318-1345), Count of Holland, Hainaut and Zeeland.
