Margaret II, Countess of Hainaut

Margaret I of Holland (c. 1307/1310, † June 23, 1356 ), also known as Margaret of Avesnes and Margaret of Hainault, was the second wife of Emperor Louis of Bavaria, whom she married in Cologne on 26 February 1324. As Margaret I, she was Countess of Holland, Zeeland and Friesland from 1345 to 1354, as Margrethe II also Countess of Hainault 1345-1356.

Life

Margaret was the daughter of Count William III. Holland ( William I of Hainaut ) out of the house Avesnes and his wife Joan of Valois and followed along with her husband their fallen brother William IV of Holland ( William II of Hainaut ) in 1345 in the Dutch Counties.

1346 Margaret went back to Holland to secure their claim to the Dutch counties, but could not prevent the coronation of the Luxembourger Charles IV in Bonn. Her husband Louis of Bavaria died in 1347 even before it had come to the decisive battle of the two kings. His sons ruled first together the Wittelsbach possessions, their heritage in 1349 but split on each other and reconciled himself with Charles IV in 1350 from.
