Stephen, Duke of Slavonia

Stephan (* December 26, 1332; † August 9, 1354 ) was Prince of Hungary - Croatia and governor of Transylvania, Slavonia, Dalmatia and Croatia

Stephan was the youngest of five sons of King Charles I of Hungary from the House of Anjou and his third wife Elisabeth of Poland. He was the younger brother of Ludwig I and Andrew of Hungary, the husband of Queen Joanna I of Naples.

As Regent of Spis and Saris Stephan in 1349 established his own farm. Later he was appointed Regent of Transylvania, 1351 regent of Croatia and Dalmatia. In 1353 he became Duke of Slavonia .. He died a year later. His son was initially allowed to take ownership of his father, but this scheme in 1353 has been revoked.

On Stephen of Hungary, the oldest part of the castle palace goes back to Budapest. From the tower of St. Stephen: but (Hungarian István ), there are only the foundations.

Marriage and children

In January 1350 he married Margaret of Bavaria, a daughter of the Emperor Louis IV from his marriage with Margaret of Hainault. The couple had two children:

  • Elisabeth ( * 1352, † before 1380 ); ∞ Philip II of Taranto ( House of Anjou )
  • Johann (* 1354, † 1363), who on June 24, 1355 as the legacy of his great-uncle, Casimir III. was used by Poland, but did not survive him.
