William Leonard D'Mello

William Leonard D' Mello ( born March 24, 1931 in Cascia, Mangalore, Karnataka, India, † July 19, 2011 in Mangalore ) was an Indian clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Karwar.

Life

William Leonard D' Mello studied theology and philosophy at the Seminary of St. Peter in Bangalore, which was led by the Paris Mission. He received on 16 April 1957, the ordination to the priesthood by Archbishop Thomas Pothakamury. After pastoral work, he was Vicar General in 1966 in Bangalore. In 1976 he became deputy canon and administrator of the diocese.

Pope Paul VI. appointed D' Mello in 1976 the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Karwar. The episcopal ordination on April 29, 1977 He received his Curia Archbishop Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples; Co-consecrators were Packiam Arokiaswamy, Bishop of Bangalore, and Ignatius P. Lobo, Bishop of Belgaum.

In 2007, his age-related resignation by Pope Benedict XVI. granted.
