William Vickrey

William Spencer Vickrey ( born June 21, 1914 in Victoria, British Columbia; † 11 October 1996 in New York) was an American economist of Canadian origin. In 1996, he shared with James Mirrlees the Prize in Economic Sciences the Bank of Sweden in memory of Alfred Nobel for his contributions to the economic theory of incentives under different degrees of information among market participants.

Life

Vickrey 1946 was a lecturer at Columbia University in New York, after he previously worked as an accountant, then he became a professor of economics.

Vickreys results had a direct influence on the tariff policy of insurance and tax policy. He gave the Vickreyauktion his name, is offered in the secret, the highest bidder but pays only the price of the second highest bid.

Granted all his " Nobel Prize in Economics " he could not accept because he died between the announcement and the official ceremony date on 10 December 1996.
