William Worrall Mayo

William Worrall Mayo ( born May 31, 1819 in Eccles, † March 6, 1911 in Rochester, Minnesota ) was an English physician and chemist. In 1889 he founded at the urging of the Sisters of St. Francis in Rochester, the Mayo Clinic. He was the father of Charles Horace Mayo and William James Mayo.

Life

William Worrall Mayo was born in 1819 as the son of a sailing ship captain in England. Although he had studied medicine, he completed a diploma. 1845 Mayo went to America and worked as an assistant pharmacist. Only a short time later he left the medical field and opened in Lafayette, Indiana, a tailor's shop. When cholera broke out, all medical workers were needed for Mayo and was quickly appointed to the doctor. On stolen corpses Mayo renewed his medical knowledge and his PhD degree.
