Willie May

William Lee " Willie" May ( born November 11, 1936 in Knoxville, Alabama; † 28 March 2012) was an American track and field athlete. The special section of the hurdler was the 110-meter distance.

Career

May drew attention to himself when he won three titles with the Blue Iceland High School in the championship of the State of Illinois in athletics scene for the first time in 1955. Between 1957 and 1959 he won ten titles hurdle for the Indiana University. In 1960 he qualified as second in the U.S. eliminator for the Olympic Games in Rome. There was a triple triumph of the United States: May won in 13.8 s silver behind the contemporaneous Lee Calhoun and before Hayes Jones ( 14.0 s ). Also he won silver at the Pan American Games in 1963 in São Paulo. His personal best of 13.4 s he set up on 12 August 1960.

1967 May PE teacher and athletics coach at Evanston Township High School. In 2000 he retired from his teaching post, but remained until 2006 as a coach and then as assistant coach. May 2000 was introduced in the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame, 2007 in the Illinois Track & Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame and in 2010 into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame. He died on March 28, 2012 to amyloidosis.
