Witold Wojtkiewicz

Witold Wojtkiewicz ( born December 29, 1879 in Warsaw, † June 14, 1909 ) was a Polish painter, draftsman and printmaker. His works show features of Art Nouveau, Symbolism and Expressionism.

His father, a cashier at the Warsaw Trade Bank, disapproved of the artistic interest of the son, his mother was busy with taking care of eleven children. Nevertheless Wojtkiewicz studied at the Warsaw Drawing School and 1903-1904 at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts in Leon Wyczółkowski. Before he started in 1902 to study at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, but it broke after eight days.

1905 Wojtkiewicz joined the artist group, which also included Leopold Gottlieb and Vlastimil Hofman.

He was friends with Tadeusz Boy - Żeleński and worked in he founded the Cracow cabaret "The Green Balloon " ( Zielony Balonik ) with.

He wrote satirical texts for the weekly " Kolce " ( The mandrels ).

Wojtkiewicz also dealt with the book design. His works showed an individual character, with a squiggly, capricious lines.

His works have been exhibited in Berlin, ranked by Maurice Denis and André Gide high. Gide organized an individual exhibition at the Galerie Druet for Wojtkiewicz.

Wojtkiewicz died prematurely at the age of only 29 years due to a congenital, incurable heart disease.
