Wolfgang Helck

Wolfgang Helck, actually Hans Wolfgang Helck, ( born September 16, 1914 in Dresden, † August 27, 1993 in Hamburg ) was a German Egyptologist.

Helck was a son of the philologist Hans Helck and his wife Gertrude. He studied in Leipzig with Georg Stein Dorff and in Göttingen at Hermann Kees and graduated in 1938 with his doctorate. As a soldier in the Second World War, he became in 1943 in captivity. In 1947 he returned to Göttingen and habilitated there in 1951. Initially Helck was Privatdozent in Göttingen before he became in 1956 associate professor of Egyptology at the University of Hamburg from 1963 until his retirement in 1979 he worked there as a professor.

Helck was a member of the German Archaeological Institute and was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen.

He remained active after his retirement and was together with Wolfhart Westendorf editor of the encyclopedia of Egyptology, which was completed in 1992. Helck is considered one of the foremost Egyptologists of the 20th century. He published a number of books and articles on the history of the Egyptian and Near Eastern culture.
