Wolfgang Musculus

Wolfgang Musculus, actually Müslin ( born September 8, 1497 Dieuze ( Duß ), Lorraine; † August 30, 1563 in Bern ) was a Reformed theologian and reformer.

Life and work

Musculus was the son of Anton Küfners Mäuslin and Angela Sartori. He attended the local schools in renowned humanists Rappoltsweiler, Colmar and Schlettstadt. In 1512 he entered the Benedictine monastery of Lixheim in German Lorraine, where he deepened his knowledge of the Latin classics, and also dealt extensively with theology and music. A turning point for the monk asked the confrontation with the writings of Martin Luther, from 1518 dar. as ' Lutheran monk ' as well as popular and well known preacher remained Wolfgang Musculus another ten years at the monastery Lixheim, which he eventually left in 1527. He moved to Strasbourg, married the maid Margaretha Barth, with whom he had nine children, and worked a few months as an apprentice weaver. Six sons went to the Bernese church service, including Abraham Musculus (1534-1591), who continued the chronicle of John Haller and 1586 at the Colloquy of Montbéliard participated. In 1528, he was on the side of Matthew Deacon cell in the Strasbourg Cathedral. There he also met the famous preacher Martin Bucer, with whom he was living in long and friendly relationship.

1531 he went to Augsburg:

After 17 years of effectiveness, he left under vehemently protest the city because of the introduction of the Augsburg Interim, to find the recording after a partly dramatic escape in Bern. There he received in 1549 a professor of theology at the ' High School '.
