Wolfgang P. Schleich

Wolfgang Schleich ( born February 23, 1957 in Mühldorf ) is a German physicist who deals with quantum optics.

Life

Schleich studied at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich, where in 1981 he be graduated in ( quantum fluctuations in ring lasers ), received his doctorate in Marlan Scully 1984 ( Optical tests of general relativity ), where he 1982/83 at the Institute of Modern Optics of the University of New Mexico was in Albuquerque at Scully, and his habilitation in 1989. 1984-1986 he was a post-doc at the University of Texas at Austin with John Archibald Wheeler and after, researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching near Herbert Walther. From 1991 he was professor at the University of Ulm, where he is Head of quantum physics. In 2008, he was also a Distinguished Professor at the University of North Texas in Denton.

Schleich deals with theoretical and experimental quantum optics, with applications to tests of general relativity ( investigations for noise suppression in ring laser gyroscopes ) and in quantum computer science and the foundations of quantum mechanics. He examined the interaction of light with atoms in atomic traps and pointed there by collective effects and examined the construction of quantum states having an access on the phase space (and the Wigner function ), about which he wrote a fundamental textbook.

1996 to 1998 he was standing in front of Quantum Optics Division of the German Physical Society. In 2008 he was awarded the Willis E. Lamb Award. He is the editor of Optics Communications. In 1995 he was awarded the Leibniz Prize, the 2002 Max Planck Research Award, the 1991 Physics Prize of the German Physical Society, 1993, the Otto Hahn Medal, 2007, the first class medal at the Technical University in Prague and 1993, the Ernst Abbe medal. He is a member of the Academia Europaea, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, the Optical Society of America, the European Optical Society, the American Physical Society.
