Wolfgang Preisendanz

Wolfgang PREISENDANZ ( born April 28, 1920 in Pforzheim, † 29 September 2007) was a German in German studies and relevant literature scholar.

Life

Wolfgang PREISENDANZ, doctor's son from Pforzheim, was after his graduation in 1938 from 1939 to 1945 soldier in the Second World War. After the war, he taught first at village schools and took a 1946 study of German, Romance, history and philosophy at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg. He received his doctorate in 1951 with Paul Boeckmann at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg with a thesis on the verdict form in the poetry of the old Goethe and their history since Opitz and then worked as a teacher at the Elector Friedrich -Gymnasium in Heidelberg. In 1957 he was head of department at the University of Heidelberg Institute interpreter. In 1961 he habilitated at the University of Cologne on humor as a poetic imagination.

In 1962 he was appointed to the Chair of Modern German Literary History at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. In 1966 he moved to the University of Konstanz. 1988 PREISENDANZ became Professor Emeritus. He was a visiting professor at various universities in the U.S. and Japan.

Work

Wolfgang PREISENDANZ was one of the seven founding professors of the University of Konstanz and participates as a professor of German literature and general literature instrumental in the development of the leading international Constance school of literature. He was a longtime member of the Greater and Lesser Senate of the University of Konstanz and thereby contribute significantly to the structural design of the young university.

The German Press Agency ( dpa ) stated on October 1, 2007, that after the Romanists Hans Robert Jauss, the Latinist Manfred Fuhrmann and Wolfgang Iser the English studies with the German studies PREISENDANZ the last member of the prestigious Konstanz school ' had died. The scientists have together represented a literary research profile in the interdisciplinary research group " poetics and hermeneutics " was constituted.

One of the main research areas of PREISENDANZ was the humor. His inaugural lecture in 1970 was devoted to the morphology of the joke. For his research, he received the 1988 " Kassler Literary Prize for Grotesque Humor ". He has published numerous scientific papers, particularly on Heinrich Mann. His habilitation thesis in 1961 wrote " humor as a poetic imagination " about the German Realism of ETA Hoffmann to Theodor Fontane is still considered important work.
