Wolfgang U. Dressler

Wolfgang Ulrich Dressler ( born December 22, 1939 in Vienna) is an Austrian linguist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Vienna. Since 1989 he has been chairman of the Commission of Linguistics and Communication Research, and since 2010 Deputy Director of the Institute for Corpus Linguistics and Text Technology, Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Life and work

Wolfgang U. Dressler, was born on 22 December 1939 as a son of Dr. Oskar Dressler Obermagistratsrat and musician Elizabeth Dressler, born resentment. Dressler is since 1962 married to Rosemarie Dressler, born Pirch, and has two daughters.

Dressler studied from 1957 to 1962 Linguistics and Classical Philology at the University of Vienna and graduated with Mag phil. and Dr. phil. from. 1960-1961 he studied in Rome, 1964-1965 in Paris. He habilitated at the University of Vienna in Linguistics in 1968.

From 1961 to 1962 Dressler worked as a teacher at the sample Piaristengymnasium in Vienna and from 1962 to 1964 as epigraphists at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. 1964-1969 he was an assistant at the Institute of Linguistics of the University of Vienna. In 1970 he went as a lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles, and from 1970 to 1971 as an associate professor at the Ohio State University in Columbus. Many guest professorships and lectures have taken him over the years to various institutions across Europe, the Americas and Asia.

1971-2008 Dressler was a full professor of General and Applied Linguistics at the Institute of Linguistics of the University of Vienna, 1978-2008, he had also assumed the function of the Institute Board.

1979 Dressler was elected a corresponding member in Germany and 1992 for real member of the philosophical- historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since 1989, Dressler chairman of the Commission of Linguistics and Communication Research, and since 2010 Deputy Director of the Institute for Corpus Linguistics and Text Technology, Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since 1995 he is a corresponding member of the Accademia della Crusca of Florence.

2013 Dressler was awarded for his life's work of Cardinal Innitzer price.

To Dresslers research include text linguistics, phonology, morphology, language acquisition and psycholinguistics. He is both an important representative of naturalness theory as well known for working with Robert -Alain de Beaugrande about textuality.

In 2001, a Festschrift for Dressler appeared in English entitled "Naturally " to the many colleagues contributed articles from various areas of linguistics.

Wolfgang U. Dressler has published over 400 books and articles of which at this point only a small number to be called. The "Introduction to text linguistics " by de Beaugrande and Dressler appeared in German, Italian, English, Bulgarian, Spanish, Hungarian and French.
