Wolfram Eberhard

Wolfram Eberhard ( born March 17, 1909 in Potsdam, † August 15, 1989 ) was a German sinologist and ethnologist.

Life

Eberhard came from a family of astronomers and astrophysicists. His parents were Gustav Eberhard and Gertrude, née Müller. He studied from 1927 Sinology, Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Berlin and at the same time secretly attended courses on modern Chinese at the Department of Oriental Languages ​​, as his professors this interest not approved at the Berlin University.

Eberhard graduated from in 1929 and received his PhD in 1933 in Sinology. 1934 married Eberhard Alide Romans and settled with her over to China, where he held teaching positions in German and Latin.

In 1936, Eberhard curator for the Asia Section at the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, but emigrated to escape the Nazis and in 1937 became a teacher of Chinese at the University of Ankara, a position he held for eleven years. He was significantly involved in the development of Turkish Chinese Studies.

His most famous work is the dictionary of Chinese symbols, which was still reprinted. His writings on the Chinese folk tale drew the interest of the layers formed on this aspect of Chinese culture.
