Wonderland (adventure game)

Wonderland is a text adventure game, which was developed by Magnetic Scrolls and published in 1990 by Virgin Games.

Action

Wonderland is based on the children's book Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The player assumes the role of Alice. However, no elements from the novel sequel are used.

Control

With this game, Magnetic Scrolls introduced a new control system called Magnetic Windows. The player's inventory, map, graphics, etc. are all displayed in separate windows and can be moved and scaled as desired. It is possible to push drag and drop objects between windows back and forth, and so, for example, to manage inventory; In addition, there are context menus for individual objects. Likewise, the interface as a third control option can enter commands via a drop-down list, instead of having to type in manually, as with other text adventures was the case until now. The developers wanted to so simplify the accessibility and give the game an extra incentive.

A special feature is further mentioned that you can interact with almost all kinds of objects and a corresponding feedback from the game gets because developers pay particular attention reasoned that the player never gets to a point where it needs to read that a idea and possibility was not considered.

Development

The development began in 1987 when David Bishop one of the company founders, Anita Sinclair, first drafts presented for it. Bishop was then project developers.

Ratings of the press

The ASM has named the game its time for " Game of the Month ", and forgave the then still very rare distinction of " mega-hit ", when the game was in almost all rating categories 12 of 12 points.

PowerPlay awarded the Seal " particularly Recommended " and evaluated the game with 88%.

The Amiga Joker awarded the prize "hit" and depreciated by 92 %.

Others

In retrospect, Rob Steggles, a former employee at Magnetic Scrolls, in an essay to the suggestion that Wonderland main cause of financial ruin at Magnetic Scrolls was because too many people worked on the project and it remained in the sales figures far below expectations.
