Warkum ( Frisian name, Dutch Workum ) is a Dutch town in the southwest of the province of Friesland. Warkum has about 4300 inhabitants and belongs to the municipality Nijefurd. Warkum one of the eleven Frisian cities.

Workum is connected by an approximately two-kilometer long channel with the IJsselmeer and has several marinas. Traditionally lived Warkum from maritime trade, fishing and pottery, while the tourism and recreational boating are very significant today.

History

Warkum evolved from an agricultural settlement in the late Middle Ages as an important shipping center. The decisive factor was the situation on the watercourse de Wymerts that connected the Zuiderzee with the Frisian inland waters. This resulted in the elongated structure of the village along the water's edge.

The first settlement to the year 1000 AD was made by fishermen and farmers on natural increases. With the beginning of the embankment settlements spread out. Warkum received city rights in 1399 and had at times its own mint and their own guild.

Despite the decline of the Hanseatic League in the 15th century and the development of cities in Holland and Zeeland Warkum retained a significant position because of its ship building industry. Additionally, there was a well-known potters industry. In the first quarter of the 16th century it came to sieges and attacks. In 1533 the city imposed the maintenance obligation for the dike. In the 17th century it comes to reclamation and draining of some inland lakes, the construction of a waterway by Boalsert ( 1620-1648 ) and of the sea lock ( 1658) renewal. Due to the poorer accessibility Warkums by silting and the strong position of De Lemmer and urine navigation comes in the 18th century almost to a standstill.

In the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century a series of canals and waterways are filled in the city and built on agricultural land. Since 1984 Warkum together with Starum and Hylpen part of the community Nijefurd.
