The World Heritage Committee meets annually at different locations. It consists of representatives from 21 of the States which have acceded to the World Heritage Convention. They are elected by the General Assembly for each 6 years. In its first session, the World Heritage Committee has adopted the rules of procedure. Since November 2011, Germany is again a member of the World Heritage Committee.

A Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage was adopted in 2001 by the UNESCO General Conference and entered into force in 2009.
