Objectives and participants

The meeting under the headline:

" To outro mundo é possivel. "

"Another world is possible."

The movement was created by the initiative of several international organizations, which in turn emerged from the survey of the Zapatistas in Chiapas (Mexico) in 1994. Indigenous inhabitants of the region rebelled against new forms of oppression that were associated with globalization. New organizations and movements (such as Peoples Global Action ) wanted to continue the struggle of the Zapatistas and bring their demands to the international language.

With the global gathering is intended, among other things, to offer alternatives to the dominant in the media conceptual model of the global neo-liberalism and to promote their elaboration. At the level of symbolic politics, it is intended to express that there is also a different kind of globalization, which moves away from the WTO and G8 summits. The cross-linking socially committed individuals and organizations should establish also expressed that a globalization - can also be responsible thinking and acting for the good of the whole world mean - instead of deregulation to the advantage of the stronger. The World Social Forum is dominated by people of different worldviews. For example, Franciscans involved since the beginning of the World Social Forum and posted each worldwide Franciscan delegations as a sign of solidarity and common struggle.

The World Social Forum is to resolve less concrete measures or adopt resolutions, but are rather the coordination and exchange of experience. The wide range of different groups opens to the opinion of the organizers the chance of different angles and wide interests. Many of the participants, especially from the so-called developing countries, not interested in ideological battles grave, but rather a call for pragmatic politics. So many well support a global market opening, but criticize distortions of competition, for example through subsidies in the industrialized countries. For these participants represent more neoliberal positions.

The Charter of Principles of 2001 defines the identity of the World Social Forum (WSF ):

" 1 The World Social Forum is an open meeting place for reflective thinking, democratic debate of ideas, formulation of proposals, free exchange of experiences and interlinking for effective action, by and by groups and movements of civil society, the neo-liberalism and domination of the world by capital and oppose any form of imperialism, and are committed to building a planetary society directed towards fruitful relationships within the human and between it and the Earth. "

In its declaration of the meeting of 2009, the social movements and organizations take the view that the global crisis is no longer cope with the means of capitalism. The measures taken so far would have only a socialization of losses. They speak against it from without compensation for nationalization of the banking sector and reductions in working time without wage cuts.
