Polyprion americanus

The groupers ( Polyprionidae ) live in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, in temperate and subtropical areas. As an ambush predator, they are accordingly often found their name in the cavities of the wreck.

Features

There are large, 1.5 to 2.5 meter long animals of typical perch shape. Head and trunk are covered with small comb scales. Their dorsal fin is clearly nicked but not divided and has eleven to twelve hard jets and the same amount of soft rays. The tail ends straight or rounded. The pelvic fins have a very strong fin spines. The lateral line is complete. At the upper edge of the gill cover there is an approximately horizontally extending longitudinal keel, terminating in a short spine.
