Wynkyn de Worde

Wynkyn de Worde, in various sources, also Winandus van Worden, John or Johannes Wynkyn or Wykyn, Wynkyn Vort or William Wykyn († 1535 in London ) was an English printer.

Life

It is believed that De Worde was from Woerth in Alsace. He was assistant to the first English book printer William Caxton, with whom he worked in Westminster since 1477. He probably came with or shortly after Caxton to England. After his death († 1491 ) De Worde took as his successor over 800 titles out in 45 years and moved with his printing in 1500 of Westminster in London's Fleet Street. He printed the first Englishman music and italics. Furthermore, De Worde took out many textbooks, such as the grammars of John Colet, Erasmus, and William Lilly.
