Yellow Horn ( Xanthoceras sorbifolia )

Yellow Horn ( Xanthoceras sorbifolia ) is the only species of the monotypic genus Xanthoceras and the subfamily Xanthoceroideae within the family of Soapberry ( Sapindaceae ). Xanthoceras sorbifolia was built in 1833 by Alexander von Bunge in Enum. Pl China Bor, 11 first described as sorbifolia.

Dissemination

The yellow horn comes from the northern China; Locations are in the provinces of Gansu, Hebei, Henan, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Shaanxi and Shandong. It also aims to provide localities in Korea. There has a temperate climate.

In Central Europe the yellow horn long time had been very rarely planted; now but it is also sold by nurseries.

Description

In his home the yellow horn grows as a deciduous tree or shrub, reaching heights of growth of 2 to 5 meters. In Central Europe, although it is hardy, but grows mostly Shrubby. The stalked leaves are pinnate 15 to 30 cm long and unpaired. The leaflets are toothed.

In its heyday, May-June appear 12 to 20 cm long, erect, racemose inflorescences. The bracts are oval and large. There are male and hermaphrodite flowers on one plant, but not in an inflorescence. The hermaphrodite, radiärsymmetrische flower is just under 3 inches tall. There are five sepals and petals present. See the sepals by its felted hair gray. The petals are predominantly, to flower towards the center, however, initially green, later colored red. In each flower, there are eight 1.5 cm long stamens. Three carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. In each of the three ovary chambers are in two lines seven to eight ovules available.

In the fall, 4-6 cm large, chestnut -like fruits ripen. The seeds are edible.
