Xanthomonadaceae

The Xanthomonadaceae are a family of Proteobacteria and form the order Xanthomonadales. It is gram- negative bacteria that can live only in the presence of oxygen ( obligate aereob ).

Features

The cells are rod-shaped. Some species are flagellated polar, others move to slide. Also immobile bacteria are present in the family. Outlasting such as spores are not formed. There are oxidase - positive and oxidase -negative species present, the catalase test is, however, negative in all species. Many species form conspicuous dyes, so colonies are often colored yellow by Xanthomonas by special pigments such Xanthomonadine, bromine- containing polyenes.

Ecology

Xanthomonadaceae are widespread and inhabit a wide variety of habitats. Species of the genus Lysobacter occur in soil and fresh water. Nevskia is preferably present on the water surface, forming rosettes of flat branched, slimy stems.

Many species, especially of the genus Xanthomonas are phytopathogenic, some can be dangerous to humans. The genus Stenotrophomonas often occurs in hospitals and may be involved in nosocomial infections. Xylella fastidiosa is in the plant tissue, specifically in the xylem, before and can act phytopathogenic. It is the cause of the disease Pierce'schen (Pierce 's Disease ) in wine and other plant diseases.
