Yakov Sannikov

Yakov Sannikov (Russian Яков Санников; * 1780 in Ust- Jansk; † after 1812) was a Russian explorer, trader and cartographer in the early 19th century.

Life

Sannikov sailed the East Siberian and Laptev Sea, which, besides, he discovered and charted some islands of the New Siberian Islands, namely the Stolbowoi Island ( 1800) and the Faddejewski Island ( 1805).

1808-1810, he led, together with Matvei Gedenstrom an expedition to the mapping of the New Siberian Islands. In this expedition the islands of New Siberia and Kotelny were first discovered, Sannikov "discovered" another island north of Kotelnyinsel. This so-called " Sannikov Land", whose existence was later confirmed supposedly also of expeditions Eduard Toll, but is likely to prove as recent research have never actually existed.

After the discovery is the Sannikowstraße, a strait between the island and little Liakhov Kotelny named.
