Yaroslav Osmomysl

Yaroslav Vladimirovich Osmomysl (Russian Ярослав Владимирович Осмомысл; * May 26, 1119; † October 1, 1187 ) was a Russian prince from the race of Rurik, the Halych -Volyn Principality the ruled 1153-1187. His surname Osmomysl (Russian Осмомысл ) means roughly the thinker.

Yaroslav was the son of the Galician prince Wladimirko Wolodarewitsch and the daughter of King Koloman of Hungary. Jaroslaw married in 1149 Olga, the daughter of Yuri Dolgoruky and closed by an alliance against the Kievan Grand Prince Izjaslav II

He was a very able ruler, under whose auspices the trade and crafts flourished and the population grew. Nevertheless, he had to fight the rebellious boyars, who allied themselves along the lines of the neighboring Hungarian and Polish aristocracy to an influential group against the Prince. In the chronicles Jaroslaw Osmomysl is described as a very respected Rurikide, whose word was in the ranks of the other princes, and much of the active mitmischte in the policies of the principalities of Kievan Rus. It finds mention in the ancient Russian Igor song.

Under Jaroslaw Osmomysl the fortress Chern was founded, now known as Czernowitz.
