After the Portuguese had conquered in 1507 and later Muscat Sohar and Sur, they controlled the Omani overseas trade. In the fight against Portuguese rule Nasir ibn Murshid united the tribes and was the Imam (see: Ibadis ) choose. Due to the high prestige of Nasir ibn Murshid was in the period following the Office of the Imam, for the first time in history of Oman, within a family " hereditary ". Only members of the Yaruba clan were elected imams.

Under Sultan ibn Saif I. trading and war fleet was expanded and the struggle against the Portuguese continued until they finally withdrew in 1650 from the country. Portugal was fought after the withdrawal of Oman, since 1698 also in Africa. Until 1743 Oman had expelled the Portuguese from their East African possessions north of Cape Delgado.

By controlling the intermediate trade between India and Southeast Asia and Arabia Oman experienced a period of prosperity. The trade in slaves from East Africa became much more important. In addition to agriculture by the expansion of irrigation canals (see: Afladsch ) was promoted. The economic prosperity also enabled an extensive construction activity. Especially in the hinterland were several magnificent residences were built (eg, Nizwa, Rustaq and Dschabrin ).

With Saif ibn Sultan II the decline of the dynasty began because he was harassed because of immaturity of several counter imams and temporarily discontinued. The many -year-long civil war led to a strong polarization of society. Saif ibn Sultan II took in 1736 and 1741 Persian troops in the country to be able to assert itself as an imam. Against the Persian conquest of the country (1741-1743) united Ahmad ibn Said the trunks and drove the Persians. After the end of Yaruba dynasty he founded in 1746 which has since reigning in Oman Said dynasty.
