Life and work

Due to the civil war Yasmine Hamdan spent with siblings and parents their first 15 years of life between Beirut, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Greece. Upon return she founded still a student along with Zaid Hamdan, the band Soap Kills. The name was a sarcastic allusion to how the Lebanese wanted to " wash " the bloody past. Jasmine Hamdan sang and wrote the songs back then in English and Arabic. With trip-hop, electronic rhythms and traditional Arabic sounds you generated a new genre. The very strict technical standards of the Arabic song replaced Jasmine Hamdan by emotions that they do not last mediated by content, various Arabic dialects, and in their performance.

Especially the traditional Arabic songs of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s had it done to her. She sees no separation between " Western music " and the Arab music with which she grew up. Especially artists such as Asmahan or Aisha Al Marta they have inspired. Jasmine Hamdan tried with their music tradition to revive them but make to the same question. Quote: On the other side, I realized what I like the culture that has influenced me, like: the humor, the sly, the sensuous life and Merry, expressed therein, and at the same time hides behind a veil of metaphors. Say something and at the same time not to say this is very Arabic!

Jasmine Hamdan lives with her husband, the Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman, in Paris.
