Yellowtail Dam

The Yellowtail Dam ( Yellowtail Dam ) was built in 1961-1966 by the Bureau of Reclamation in Montana (USA). It is located in Fort Smith, and 72 km south-west of Hardin in Big Horn County. The dam is by Robert Yellowtail, a famous chief of the Crow Indians, named.

The dam, with its arch dam one of the highest in the river basin of the Missouri River, dams the Bighorn River on the Bighorn Lake, one of the largest reservoirs in the Missouri Territory. He is the main attraction of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, which is under the management of the National Park Service. Its shoreline is more than 300 km long.

The dam is used for water storage, flood control, hydropower generation, irrigation, water supply for industry, fisheries, sediment control and recreation.

The project was approved in the Flood Control Act of 22 December 1944.
