Yoji Yamada

Yoji Yamada (Japanese山田 洋 次Yamada Yoji; * September 13, 1931 in Osaka, Honshu ) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter. He is responsible for more than 80 film and television productions.

Biography

Yamada studied until 1954 jurisprudence in Tokyo, before he came to the film in a roundabout way. He began as scriptwriter and assistant director for the renowned Japanese film company Shochiku; 1961 followed by the first work as a director for a film. From 1969 to 1996 he turned the 48 films of Japanese comedy series " Otoko wa tsurai yo" ( "It's not easy to be a man" ) with the main character Kuruma Torajirō, called "Tora -san ", which today one of the belongs to the most successful movie series in film history in Japan. Yamada resulted in 46 of the productions directed in episodes three and four he contributed only wrote the screenplay.

In addition to numerous national and international awards, his films have received four invitations in competition for the Golden Bear. 2004, his film Samurai was nominated for Best Foreign Language film at dusk for an Oscar in the category. In the 60th Film Festival in Berlin 2010 Yamada will receive the Berlinale Camera.

In April 2007 he was a visiting professor at Ritsumeikan University.
