Yoshida Shrine

The Yoshida Shrine (Japanese吉田 神社, yoshida -jinja ) is a Shinto shrine in the eastern part of the district Sakyo -ku Kyoto, Japan. It lies at the foot of the mountain Yoshida, part of the Higashiyama Mountains, and is surrounded by a deep forest. It was founded in the Heian period in the year 859 by the Fujiwara family.

History

The history narrative Eiga Monogatari by Anshi, the wife of Murakami tennō in 964 was near the Yoshida Shrine cremated and buried.

In 1081 Yoshida Shrine was added to the list of the 22 shrines.

In the second half of the 15th century founded the priest and scholar Yoshida Kanetomo ( 1435-1511, from the old soothsayer family at the imperial court, the Yoshida or Urabe ) in a particular direction of Shinto shrine, the Yoshida Shinto. The Yoshida Shinto soon received such a strong influence in Japan that the Yoshida shrine for several centuries by the Tennō received the sole right to grant licenses to practice the Shinto priesthood. Although these were not necessarily a prerequisite for the exercise of priestly activities in a Shinto shrine, but were popular for the settlement of jurisdictional disputes between religious experts within each of a shrine community.

Special

The shrine itself has some architectural features: Instead of a heathen just a simple roof, but has four dogs exist. For special spiritual exercises of the priest there is the gyōjishō -ya.

The day after Setsubun begins in Daigen - kyū ( a massha ) the expulsion of the Uji -catalyzed yagi Yamai -no- gami, the Kami of all evil, including evil thoughts and intentions ( tsumi ), dirt, disease and accidents. He will, however, also worshiped in a dogs, there is the entrance of the ' misery hill " ( yaku - zuka ), which is connected to eight Shimenawa with the dogs. During the expulsion bags are tossed with Soya beans on this hill.

For the nearby Kyoto University led priest of the shrine from the traditional Shinto rites for the groundbreaking ceremony. In addition, the shrine for his Hamaya is famous.
