Twenty-Two Shrines

The 22 shrines (Japanese二 十二 社, nijūni -sha ) of Japan are Shinto shrines 22, where the highest importance is attached to. The system was installed in the Heian period in which large administrative and theoretical effort has been made for the first time, to classify the hitherto very heterogeneous structures of the Shinto organization unique. Most of the " 22 shrines " were selected from among those in the environment ( Kinai ) then the capital of Heian - kyō ( Kyoto ).
