Øystein Mæland

Øystein Mæland ( born March 26, 1960 in Rjukan ) is a Norwegian physician and politician of the Social Democratic Arbeiderpartiet. From 20 June 2011 to 16 August 2012 he was president of Politidirektorats. The authority which is directly subordinate to the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Police, is responsible for the technical management, control and development of the Norwegian police. After criticism of an expert commission on police use in connection with the attacks in Norway Mæland resigned with immediate effect.

Life

Professional career

After graduating from Øystein Mæland began studying medicine and criminology, from which he graduated in 1986 with a medical state examination. From 1989 to 1994 and from 1997 to 2000, he worked as a doctor. In 2000, he received his recognition as a specialist in the field of psychiatry. Between 2002 and 2004 he was a senior physician at the Aker University Hospital ( Aker universitetssykehus ) in Oslo. In 2004 he took over the Leutung the Psychiatric Department of the Ullevål University Hospital, the then largest hospital in Norway. After various, previously independently minded university hospitals 2009 Oslo University Hospital (Oslo universitetssykehus ) had merged, Mæland was director of the local clinic for mental health and addictions ( Klinikk for psykisk helse above avhengighet ).

Political career

From 1979 to 1982 Øystein Mæland initiated the Oslo chapter of the Social Democratic youth organization work ern Ungdomsfylking ( ON ) and later ( 1983-1989 ), also a member of the Empire Board. 1983 to 1986 he represented the Arbeiderpartiet in the Oslo City Council. From 1988 to 1989, he was political adviser to the former Norwegian Foreign Minister Thorvald Stoltenberg and at times even the Energy Minister Arne Øien. In the government Brundtland III and the Government Jagland he was among the ministers Grete Faremo, Anne Holt and Gerd- Liv Valla State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and Police ( 1994-1997). He took this same position again in the government Jens Stoltenberg I (March 2000 - October 2001) a.

On 27 May 2011, he was ( in German media often " Sheriff " ) has been appointed as the first non-lawyer to the President of the Politidirektorats; on 20 June 2011, he took the position. After the sharp criticism of the crisis management of the Norwegian police in connection with the attacks in Norway, he joined on August 16, 2012 from his post. Private

Øystein Mæland lives openly homosexual and is with the psychotherapist Rolf Aspestrand Nicolay (born 1964 ) married. Mæland and Aspestrand are parents of two children who were born to U.S. surrogate mothers. Since Norway prohibits surrogacy on its territory and only tolerates abroad under certain conditions, he came under criticism in 2011 by representatives of the Kristelig Folkeparti and the right-wing populist Fremskrittspartiet.

Mæland is considered a close friend of the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. In 1987 he was best man at his wedding.
