Yunus Emre

Yunus Emre ( † around 1321 ) was an Anatolian poet and mystic ( Sufi ) of the Bektashi tariqa.

He is regarded as one of the first mystical folk poets in the Turkish tradition. Because of his work and his ascetic lifestyle, he is a recognized poet in Turkey. His works are in the Turkish education from the high school as required reading.

Life and work

In the 13th century mystic verses written in Turkish. With the name of Yunus Emre, the tradition of singable, simple mystical song is associated. This tradition is considered from then on typical of the literature of the Sufi orders, such as the Bektashi dervishes. The Bektashi make use of the traditions of this song, which existed before the 9th century, the " Nefes " ( breath). Yunus Emre uses this song, Alevis Deyiş ( Spoken ) and Deme ( what is said ) called.

Yunus Emre coined the Anatolian humanism with its numerous poems and songs. Yunus Emre's Complete Works have been handed down as Ilahi collections ( song books ).

After the Anatolian Alevis consider Yunus Emre has influenced and manifested Alevism prevail. They refer to all poems Yunus Emre, Ali ibn Abi Talib, the praise. There is an extraordinarily large number of poems, which can be interpreted from the perspective of the Alevis as Alevi poems.

The central theme of his poetry is the Sufi philosophy that goes back to the Neo-Platonism. After he - as he indicates in his poems - has " 40 years " been in the service of a mystic named Taptuk Emre, he is released from service and from then leads the life of a dervish.

Yunus Emre was, like many dervishes of his time, a student of Haci Bektas Veli, who was an anti- orthodox mystics with " Gnostic Illumination" and most likely was one of the Qalandari - Sufis. UNESCO declared the year 1990 Yunus Emre - year ( year of peace and love).

  • In Türkenschanzpark Vienna is a fountain in honor of Yunus Emre. The fountain is decorated with writings of the mystic.
