Life

Zacharias Heinesen is considered a central figure in the Faroese painting. Since the completion of his studies at the art academies in Reykjavík ( 1958-59 ) and Copenhagen ( 1959-62 ), he lives in the Faroese capital Tórshavn. From his studio, which sits high on a hill, a wide view over the city and harbor. This magnificent views has a central place in the design world of the painter.

Zacharias Heinesen focused from his landscapes on the expressive power and intense strength of the color and the vibrancy of the area. In his choice of subject he circles for several years especially on the subject of " village by the sea ". The gable facades and roofs of the houses form a pattern on surfaces, which also includes the many small plots of land that surround the town. The surface composition continues in the faceted structure of the mountains and the amorphous figures of cloud formations. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines indicate the outlines of houses, field boundaries, stone walls, hedges and contours of the landscape. At the same time they mark the Cubist-influenced rhythm and the movement of the image. Colour fidelity is characterized by a blue-green register, which contrasts with red and yellow shades and gold strikes in ocher tones.

The paintings are sometimes quite abstract, but the artist does not want to lose the connection to the subject - in compositions of large and small square areas of color color tones and temperature through the boundary of a horizon are separated, and the form of short striking strokes is the idea of a landscape or a townscape strengthened. Pastoral landscape watercolors and woodcuts and linocuts have an artistic ease and own ethereal grace. In decorative work, such as book illustrations, transform people in dumb delight in Arcadian landscapes between birds of paradise and magical animals and plants.
