Zaire Province

Zaire is a province of the African nation of Angola. It has about 394,000 inhabitants to 40,130 km ². The province is located in the northwest of the country, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire State. The provincial capital is called M'banza Congo during the colonial period São Salvador do Congo.

The Zaire province extends along the Atlantic coast north of Luanda between the rivers lodge in the south and in the north of the Congo estuary. It extends about 300 km into the interior.

The capital M'Banza Congo is located in the hilly interior of the province. More cities will be Soyo at the mouth of the Congo, now a center of oil production, Tomboco in de middle of the province, N'Zeto at the mouth of Mebridege in the Atlantic and Nóqui against the Congolese border town of Matadi.

The population belongs almost exclusively to the Bakongo ethnic group. The Zaire province was therefore together with the province of Zaire in the 1960s to the 1980s, the stronghold of the FNLA. This now small national opposition party there is still a higher share of the vote than in the rest of the country.
